Somatic Experiencing

Somatic experiencing is a body orientated approach aimed at relieving the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental and physical trauma-related health problems by focusing on the client’s perceived body sensations (or somatic experiences). It was developed by trauma therapist Peter A. Levine.[1][3] Somatic Experiencing is used for shock trauma in the short term and for developmental trauma as an adjunct to psychotherapy that may span years.

The SE trauma resolution method does not require the person to re-tell or re-live the traumatic event. Instead , it offers the opportunity to engage, complete and resolve, in a slow supported way, the body’s instinctual fight, flight and freeze responses. This helps reset the nervous system, restore inner balance, enhance resilience to stress, and increase people’s vitality and capacity to actively engage in life.
